Physiotherapist, Rhys Chong, is raising money for KIVA to help the poor
Hello my friends,
Most of you will know I am doing the Switzerland Ironman on the 25 July 2010. I have been training since August 2009 and I am in the last 2 months of training before the big event.
An Ironman consists of a 2.4-mile (3.86 km) swim, a 112-mile (180.25 km) bike and a marathon(26 miles 385 yards, 42.195 km) run, raced in that order and without a break.
All the support I have had so far is incredible and I have 7 close friends coming to the event to help me race. I will also be driven by my desire to help support KIVA.
KIVA is a nonprofit charity which opens lending to people in poverty to set up businesses and create better lives for themselves, the community and their families. I see it as "teaching people how to fish instead of giving them the fish to eat"
KIVA's mission is to connect people, through lending, for the sake of alleviating poverty.
These poor people can not loan money from traditional banks to improve their lives. KIVA provides them with a means to borrow money and then repay that money back so the money can be loaned to someone else in need.
KIVA has currently loaned $139,462,635 and there is a 98.15% repayment rate. 82.15% of loans have been made to woman.
To watch videos of real people helped by KIVA click on the CNBC video on this link www.kiva.org/press
To learn more about KIVA go to www.kiva.org/about
To learn how KIVA works go to www.kiva.org/about/how
To see the types of entrepreneurs you are helping go to www.kiva.org/lend
If you would like to be involved in the lending process you can send me a KIVA gift certificate. I will use your gift certificate to support an entrepreneur. I will email you details on who is being helped by your loan and then the ongoing people you help as well. Your gift certificate will continue to help many people in future.
The minimum amount to gift is $25 (USA dollars). If you would like to buy a KIVA gift certificate go to www.kiva.org/gifts/gift-certificates/buy and email me the cerficate with your message and details.
You can see my blog and youtube for ongoing updates on my training and race day.
Thank you for your kindness and generosity,
Ironman Rhys
